 Pembroke Houses and end of the town wall, seen from the top of the castle. I was sketching with a cheap American "Pilot Razor-Point" pen that I had in my pocket. Wanting to emphasize the jagged block of shadow, I marked a line around it, and that evening touched it with a brush and water, discovering that the ink ran and made a continuous gray that could be controlled. So this was the beginning of a technique—looking like pen and wash—that I used until those pens became unavailable.
