Stars over stars

Constellations from what is now our western window.

They include Tate Moderna, Turris Telecommunicationis, Fitrovia Minor, and Pons Millennia over Tamesis Flumen (the Murky Way).

You can appreciate that their brilliance obscure the constellations of deep space beyond.

    1. With careful thought, legislators could propose this Galaxy Day.
A once-in-the-year sudden sight of the Milky Way would move a majority toward reduction of energy wasted in unneeded and middirected lighting.

  1. Oy! I feel ya. I’m in much the same pickle. I’m lucky to see Venus where I live. Less than a mile down the road, and I can see the Milky Way, so it could be worse, I suppose. I chuckled at your second photo overlay of the view. :)

  2. Are you able to get out someplace dark enough to see a few planets and stars?

I cherish my little back yard here in the middle of the city. With no street lights shining directly into it, and when the neighbors’ outside lights are off, I can see third magnitude stars naked eye, and even fourth magnitude when the weather is exceptionally clear. With 10×42 binoculars I can see stars down to eighth magnitude, and a fair number of the brighter Messier objects.

  3. As interesting as the area in which you live is, I would not trade that for a decent view of the stars when I step outside my house. I live in a semi-rural neighborhood about 6 miles outside of the city and can still see the Milky Way when it’s clear. Unfortunately, we were just informed that there are plans to build a massive data center and electrical substation in the huge agricultural field west of my house, so if that occurs, I’ll be looking at Data Centeris Major instead of the western sky. Dark skies are becoming scarcer. Unfortunately, skies without satellites are impossible to find.
