Flag Day after Inauguration Day

These are three of the four flags we hope to fly on our house when that becomes possible.

Tilly and I are both citizens of the U.S.  The eight-by-five-foot Old Glory, with only 49 stars, therefore between Alaska and Hawaii, was inherited from her grandfather, whose father fought in the Civil War on the Confederate side.  I’m a citizenof the U.K. and regard myself as still a citizen of the E.U.  The Union Jack “flag” is a cushion from the Union Jack Club, in London, of which I was able to become a member because of having once been a sergeant in the British army.  The fourth flag, if we can get it, will be Argentinian, Matilda being also a citizen of Argentina, where she was born.

We’ll be able to fly these flags when lockdown ends and we can get someone to install flagpole sockets, like the one on the front of our former house, in Lyme Regis in which the local authorities put up flags during Christmas and the town’s many other festive occasions.

  1. You reliably increase my astronomical knowledge, and now you’ve increased my flag knowledge as well. Until today, I wasn’t aware of the 49 star version of the U.S. flag. Thank you! I wonder about who it is that determined the pattern of stars when it changed in year’s past, and who might determine the new one if the total ever goes to 51, 52, or beyond. A trip to Wikipedia may be in my future.

I hope you’ll share a photo once you get your flags up and proudly waving again, and I assume you’ll have a proper Union Jack and won’t resort to hoisting the pillow ;-)

  2. Uranus was flying the flag for Mars tonight and just south east of it.picked it out in a little monocular without much trouble.

  3. It seems from your post that you no longer live in Lyme Regis, or do you still live there, but in another house, please.

  4. Flag Day is one of those days that has unfortunately taken a back seat to new inventions, like the MLK assassination commemoration. Do you have an editor? The column title seems to have very little to do with the column, so i thought maybe your editor was, well, editorializing or something.

  5. you may as well add the Chinese flag too as pretty soon we’ll all be learning to speak that language tool
