Poetry is language in short paragraphs

The Tau Herculid meteor shower is expected on May 31.

See the end note about enlarging illustrations.

As our entry for it in the “Meteors” section of Astronomical Calendar 2022 says, its radiant is actually in Boötes. It derives from the extraordinary comet 73P/ Schwassmann-Wachmann 3, which is in an almost circular orbit well out beyond Jupiter, must be large, and is subject to intermittent vast outbursts of brightness as it progressively disintegrates. Dust from a fragmentation in 1995 is expected to cause a noticeable shower this year. The zenithal hourly rate is 14 (that’s the expectable number counted by one observer in an hour at peak time with good sky conditions and the radiant overhead). But there just might be a more spectacular show, considering the comet’s history of outbursts and the fragmentation event. And this year the date is favorable, only a day after new Moon. The meteors’ speed is slow, most are likely to be dim unless they are large cometary fragments.

As with many showers, the radiant is highest in the sky after midnight, and it is in those morning hours that the meteors are likely to be more numerous, swift, and bright, because they are meeting the front side of the traveling Earth.

I woke this  morning thinking:

The meteors and dreams come after midnight,
Our brow advancing scoops them from the dark.

Red, white, and blue

The Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, the 70th anniversary of her reign, will be celebrated this week. Our street in Isleworth, like our previous street in Lyme Regis, is a village main street that gets decorated with flags. And so an officiating neighbor came up and affixed one end of a line of bunting to our top windowsill.

You’d think we are patriotic.

We just like this cushion, which we got from the Union Jack Club, to which I found I could claim membership because I once was called up to the army. The previous flag we flew from this window was that of the European Union, in protest against Britain’s retrograde move of leaving it.

Red lines

Russia says that supplying Ukraine with long-range artillery, to defend itself against attacks by long-range artillery, would cross a red line. One would think that invading someone else’s country and devastating it and genociding it is the red line crossing of all red line crossings.

ILLUSTRATIONS in these posts are made with precision but have to be inserted in another format.  You may be able to enlarge them on your monitor.  One way: right-click, and choose “View image” or “Open image in new tab”, then enlarge.  Or choose “Copy image”, then put it on your desktop, then open it.  On an iPad or phone, use the finger gesture that enlarges (spreading with two fingers, or tapping and dragging with three fingers).  Other methods have been suggested, such as dragging the image to the desktop and opening it in other ways.

Sometimes I make improvements or corrections to a post after publishing  it.  If you click on the title, rather than on ‘Read more’, I think you are sure to see the latest version.  Or you can click ‘Refresh’ to get the latest version.

  1. I had “to look up” the full poem

Abou Ben Adhem (may his tribe increase!)
Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace,
And saw, within the moonlight in his room,
Making it rich, and like a lily in bloom,
An angel writing in a book of gold:—
Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold,
And to the Presence in the room he said
“What writest thou?”—The vision raised its head,
And with a look made of all sweet accord,
Answered “The names of those who love the Lord.”
“And is mine one?” said Abou. “Nay, not so,”
Replied the angel. Abou spoke more low,
But cheerly still, and said “I pray thee, then,
Write me as one that loves his fellow men.”

The angel wrote, and vanished. The next night
It came again with a great wakening light,
And showed the names whom love of God had blessed,

And lo! Ben Adhem’s name led all the rest

    —James Henry Leigh Hunt

Good poem. Jesus said the commandments can be summed up as follows: Love God, Love your neighbor.
Abou followed the 2nd commandment and that was good enough

  2. Saw 7 meteors likely from SW3 from 10:30pm EDT to 1:30am. One ‘other’ meteor.
Two were mag -2! Most were before the predicted peak time.
Unimpressive, but worth checking in case of a storm.

  3. Observed from 0:30 to 2:00 in SE NC under LM 6 skies. Saw about 18 Tau Herculids, of which about a dozen were brighter than 2nd magnitude, and about 6 sporadics.

  4. We saw about 6 Tau Herculids in 1 hour of observing, the time centered on the peak (5 UT on May 31st). Not too bad considering the limiting magnitude of our suburban sky was about 3.5.

  5. Here in San Francisco we had clear skies. From Bernal Hill, with the crest of the hill between me and the worst of the light pollution (and boy it is bad) limiting visual magnitude was 4 directly overhead. I observed from 2130 to 2230 PDT (0430 to 0530 UTC). Astronomical dusk was at 2215. Between 2217 and 2223 I saw two faint meteors and one slightly brighter meteor, all radiating from near Arcturus.

Spaceweather.com summarizes initial reports of “a gentle shower punctuated by bright flurries.” Skyandtelescope.org has an article about the predictions by Joe Rao. In the comments a couple of readers with more favorable longitudes, better skies, and more patience than me reported seeing one or more fireballs.

When I wake up in the middle of the night to pee I know I’ve been dreaming, but I rarely remember the dreams in the morning. I have much better recollection of the dreams I have in the morning, when I’m drifting back and forth between sleep and wakefulness.
