Lost-shadow time

Saturn is at opposition on Sunday, August 8.

Opposition is when the planet is straight outward from the Sun, and, as this illustration on page 121 of Astronomical Calendar 2023 shows, at this moment Saturn’s mighty shadow, falling across its rings, is invisible, in the act of swinging from one side to the other.

 

Additions to Electric poetry

There were many eloquently friendly comments on my disquisition about Fortran programming, for which I am grateful. It wasn’t predictable: we are probably a community divided between those who delight in and those who are bored by such nerdish matters. As if my disquisition wasn’t long enough, I’ve added to it a few remarks that I forgot: about capital letters, batch files, and programs called GL and HO.
