Love thy neighbor

The British government of prime minister Rishi Sunak is bent on expelling more refugees “within days,” including by the infamous scheme of flying them to Rwanda.

The Golden Rule of ethics (“Do as you would be done by”) applies in several parallel situations:

A traveler beaten by robbers lies half dead by the road; a Pharisee passes him by, a Samaritan rescues him. We should act like the Samaritan.

A ship that sees another ship sinking and its crew drowning is obliged to rescue them. It is international law.

If you are put on trial for a crime, you are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The default attitude toward those who seek asylum is the Warm Welcome. Not the Hostile Environment.

  1. Yup—Asylum laws are meant for asylum seekers, NOT for economic immigrants taking advantage of such laws to circumvent quotas, which are the RIGHT of sovereign states to impose on economiuc migrants.

  2. Thank you Guy.

In response to your other commentators, Jesus also said, “blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

  3. Well said, Guy! Love thy neighbor is part of the Christian message but it is dismissed by many Christians in the US. Yes, there are bad apples in any population, but the refugee crisis is a world crisis and we all need to think what is causing such huge groups from the global south to flee to the global north. Decades of bad policy towards Latin America, climate change, governmental corruption here and there, are some of the causes to it. And how can all of us co tribute to alleviate this situation. I recently read Solito. I highly recommend this book!

  4. Good one! I saw an interview with an illegal invader in New York City, where they are being treated to luxury hotels, demanding to know when he will be given the free house he expects to receive for illegally entering the USA, because it’s a “rich country.”

  5. i share your outrage. i believe we should all personally house indefinitely at least three illegals. free room and board.

    1. The asylum-seekers are “illegal” because no safe and legal way to reach the country and apply for asylum has been made possible for them. They are “undocumented” because they have had to make dangerous escapes from conditions of war or persecution in their own countries, many of them after being tortured.
