No wonder it’s hot

Sunrise will be earliest tomorrow.

The time of sunrise is June 14 4:31 AM by standard time, for latitude 40° north; an hour later for clocks on “daylight-shifting” summer time. And the date varies for higher and lower latitudes.

Yet the solstice, when the Sun appears farthest north, is to come, on June 21. Why do the extreme times of sunrise and sunset not coincide with the June and December solstices? It’s laid out in our page on “Latest and earliest sunrise and sunset.”

  1. Thank you. I’ve seen a page somewhere that plots what the equation of time would be if it were solely due to the eccentricity of Earth’s orbit, and another plot of what the equation of time would be if it were solely due to the obliquity of the Earth’s axis of rotation, and then the usual plot of the equation of time. That helped me wrap my head around it. I keep track of sunrise, local apparent noon, and sunset times here at 38 degrees north 122 degrees west, so I’m constantly seeing the equation of time in action. My friends have learned to expect a lecture whenever they say, “let’s meet at noon.”

    1. Those curves could be added to my page about the equation of time. They could perhaps be on top of each other and the compound curve. I’ll add it to my should-do list.

  2. Do you have a page for the equation of time? Isn’t it both the eccentricity of the Earth’s orbit around the Sun and the inclination of Earth’s axis of rotation relative to the plane of her orbit that causes true solar time to vary from mean solar time?
